Reflecting on city climate action and implementing a green COVID-19 recovery

The International Networking Seminar 2021

Peer-to-peer exchange is a vital component of the Urban-LEDS project. Through learning and reflection, local governments – as key project stakeholders – can exchange experiences, good practices, but also frankly discuss failures and challenges, and how to overcome these. The focus is on lessons learned, developing new partnerships, and gathering ideas to step up climate action and collaboration models that would support your local work.

The international networking seminar is one of the flagship mechanisms for global city-to-city exchange. In the first phase of the Urban-LEDS project, two seminars were held, respectively in 2013 (Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa) and 2015 (Bogor, Indonesia). In the project second phase, the EU study tour in 2019 provided a great opportunity to learn but also exchange experiences between project cities. This was followed by the Daring Cities 2020 sessions on Urban-LEDS and other virtual workshops. The networking seminar of 2021 will offer a final opportunity to exchange, before the project comes to an end in December 2021.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, this seminar will take place virtually. As a highlight, coming as it does towards the end of the project, the seminar is a perfect opportunity to share success stories of our cities and reflect on lessons learned in Urban-LEDS II, as well as how to now accelerate integrated climate action and effective multilevel governance.

The marketplace provide a unique and direct dialogue opportunity among the project cities. This comes with the opportunity for cities to pitch innovative solutions, technologies and strategies put in place in their respective contexts, addressing relevant questions and deepening understanding of their peers on the topic. While technical experts are best suited for this session, local government representatives working in different sectors of the city are encouraged to participate and tap on the potential of the marketplace.

Multi-level governance is one of the two major cross-cutting thematic focus areas of the Urban-LEDS project (along with finance). This session therefore promises to bring together national and local governments from project countries to share project experiences and critical lessons learnt in enabling sustainable urban development through the promotion and implementation of a shared approach to policy-making, finance and implementation between local and national governments
