Urban-LEDS inspired Solution Session “Beyond Climate Emergency: Turning ambition to action” at the Mannheim2020 Conference

September 4, 2020

On Friday 2 October 2020 from 9:30 to 11:00 Urban-LEDS will be part of a solution session at the 9th edition of ICLEI’s flagship European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns Series – Mannheim2020.

9th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns
Mannheim, Germany 30 Sep – 2 Oct 2020

In light of a growing number of local governments demonstrating their ambition for climate action in calling for a climate emergency, the session aims to explore how the debate and status of climate emergency has impacted the work of city planners practically and will present replicable, tangible, innovative and bold local integrated climate action to translate urgency into practice. Discussing ambition in action in engaging pitch presentations showcasing ambition in climate action, the session will contribute to accelerating the uptake of proven solutions and demonstrate how local governments can walk the talk.

Building upon pitch presentations, panellists will explore the shape and scale of their presented projects and kick start reflections on the implications of declaring climate emergency for city planning practice, as well as how local governments can turn ambitious aspirations and commitments into game changing action for achieving the necessary systemic changes towards a low-emission future in line with the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal.

Participants will actively contribute to reflecting on a way forward in relation to a set of key questions:

  1. Climate Emergency – publicity stunt or a game changer for local governments: What practices and systemic changes were implemented as a consequence of declaring a climate emergency and what changes are needed to achieve a low-carbon future in line with the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal?
  2. How should cities cooperate to design and implement better climate action?

Bonus Question:

  1. Back to the future – What components is my climate neutral, inclusive city made of in 2050

Speakers include Giorgia Rambelli & Carsten Rothballer (ICLEI Europe), as well as representatives from Urban-LEDS cities of Warsaw and Aalborg.
